Hospice Patient and Son Enjoy One Last Maverick’s Game

Recently, our hospice team in Dallas was caring for a man with Huntington’s disease. His wife had to quit her jobs to care for him, and unfortunately the family was almost completely out of funds. At that point, the Silverado staff came together to regularly deliver meals to the family. When the team learned that the couple’s 15-year-old son was involved in Lacrosse — a way to get his mind off of the situation — the Silverado team again pulled together, this time to buy him new shoes, allowing him to continue in the sport. 

At the time, the couple was also concerned because they were not officially married, and they didn’t want it to affect their son. The Silverado Hospice spiritual counselor immediately stepped into action. The following week, he performed the marriage ceremony at their home.

When the Silverado staff began to discuss the Go Wish program, which allows patients and families to express their final wishes, the man’s son shared that he would love to go to one more Texas Rangers game with his dad. With baseball out of season, he expressed that a Dallas Mavericks game would be special.

It just so happened that Silverado had provided hospice care to one of the Maverick’s major stockholders, and that his wife’s mother was also on Silverado Hospice. Thanks to the former patient’s wife, the family was on their way to a Maverick’s game with five floor seats, Mavericks t-shirts and special entry into the stadium. She was honored to get to pay it forward, and felt wonderful because her husband would have done the same.
